Leisure is a necessity for me, you, and even individuals with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities need a chance to explore and participate in the community for good mental health. It boosts their self-esteem and builds on their social relationships. The following resources will guide individuals with disabilities to find and join extra activities within their community.

I love hearing about what resources are available to children who have disabilities. These camps looked like so much fun! What a great opportunity! It is nice to know that they have some of the same options children without disabilities have. My favorite recreation link was the Camp Summit one. They have so many exciting things to do while participating with others outdoors! It is also great to know that financial assistance is available. This would be great for some of our lower income students. I would pass this along to parents of my students that were looking for an extracurricular activity for their child over the summer. As a parent, I think I would feel joy knowing that my child with a disability was able to experience camp life just like their peers. Love it! Thanks guys!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed all of your resources. It's great to see all what they offer for our students and familes. I have heard of camp summit before and would love to volunteer when I get the the chance. It looks like it would be a fun experience. This would be useful for my parents who are looking for something for their child to do in the summer. It would keep them active and it would be something they would really enjoy. The camp counselors would also be experience with working with children with special needs and that would probably ease the parents.
ReplyDeleteThe introduction you provided, expressed how important it is for people with disabilities to have recreation and leisure time. Each of your resources are great because they provide services in the DFW area, making it even more accessible for people living here. My favorite resource is the Camp John Marc.
ReplyDeleteThe websites displayed activities that promote physical health and conditioning, provide opportunities to develop social relations, and lead to the development of new skills.
Recreation offers a way for all individuals with disabilities to express themselves, to interact with others and our environment in a non-threatening environment, to develop a positive self-concept, and to find personal satisfaction in their lives.
I did not realize there were organizations that provide weekend services so parents can get away. This is especially useful when parents or caregivers who seem to never be able to get that one day to themselves. With this camp, parents could actually get away for a weekend and know that their child is in a safe secure environment. I would definitely use these resources, as a teacher to help give the families of my student’s ideas of leisure and recreation activities they can use for their child when they are in school or for the summer or maybe just a weekend getaway.
